At a corner in Allison Cole’s new office at Verizon New England’s headquarters sits a bulky but inconspicuous device: an antique telephone switchboard she inherited from the office’s previous occupant. The telephone as a new technology, she explained, created an occupation for women as switchboard operators at the turn of the last century.
Moments earlier, Cole was reflecting on the fact that her recent arrival to Boston as regional president means the top three region leaders at Verizon New England are now women. Cole, originally from Kingston, Jamaica, is also the highest-ranking person of color in Verizon New England. The old switchboard suddenly served as a reminder of women’s progress in the workplace.
